It never really got going for former Wantirna Little Athlete Brooke Stratton as German Malaika Mihambo claimed the most dominant women’s long jump victory in athletics world championships history in Doha on Sunday.
Brooke could manage no better than 6.46m, leaving her in 10th spot. It was 12 centimetres shy of her best effort in the qualifying round and short of her national record of 7.05m set back in 2016.
Mihambo blew the final apart with a huge third-round effort of 7.30m – the biggest jump anywhere in the world since 2016. Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk from Ukraine was a distant second with 6.92m while Ese Brume from Nigeria claimed the bronze medal with 6.91m.
While disappointed, Brooke is taking some much needed time off, and looking to next season focused and ready to go, and just maybe a spot at the Olympics in 2020.
One of the greatest Mens shotput finals occurred overnight at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha.
With the opening effort of the men’s shot put final, Ryan Crouser (USA) produced the longest throw in World Championships history with 22.36m. By the end, that mark was only the equal-seventh best of the night in what proved to be the greatest – and closest – shot put competition ever.
USA’s 2015 world champion Joe Kovacs produced one of the biggest upsets of the championships by unleashing a final-round effort of 22.91m to take the title. After a thrilling final round, just one centimetre ultimately separated the three medallists with Crouser taking second place on countback from Tom Walsh (NZ), both throwing 22.90m.
Kovas, Crouser, Walsh and fourth-placed Brazlian Darlan Romani (22.53m) all bettered the world championships record of 22.23m, set by Switzerland’s Werner Gunthor in Rome in 1987.
There is also an Australian connection with the final. Tom Walsh who finished with the bronze medal is coach by Australian and former athlete Dale Stephenson. Dale competed at the London 2012 olympics representing Australia in the Shotput.
If you get a chance to watch the highlights this is one of the greatest shotput finals you will ever see.
Former Wantirna Little Athlete Brooke Stratton has qualified for the Long Jump final at the IAAF World Championship Overnight.
Stratton finished ninth in the qualifying on Saturday night with a jump of 6.58m. Yet some of the bigger names in the field struggled in the humid conditions and the four time world champion, American Brittney Reese failed by just one place to make the final.
The Final is tonight and will start at 7.15pm in Doha (Monday morning 3.15am Melbourne AEST).

Key Dates
Try Out Day – 21 September 2019 and the Season Begins – 5 October 2019.
Chief Officials Training is also on the 21 September 2019 from 9.00am – 10.30am.
If anybody would like to be a Chief Official please contact our Team Manager, Janine Kearsley. Wantirna LAC has responsibility for front straight marshalling and discus/shotput. We are always looking for more people to Chief events. It is an easy role and training is provided.
For those attending the Chief Officials Training please ensure that you have your valid Working With Children details.
Just a quick reminder, as per past seasons, all returning families are required to do duty at least twice in the month of October to make it easier for all the new families.
If you have a specific request for duty or cannot do duty on a specific day they should be forwarded to Wayne Griffin at gri@mwsc.vic.edu.au. It is too early at this stage to know how many weeks of duty each family will be required to do.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact our Team Manager, Janine Kearsley. Janine will be at the track this Saturday at the Try Out Day from 10.30am.
If you know anyone that wants to try out, please bring them down.
