Our Season record breakers

Congratulations to all of our athletes and our award winners. It is great to see how well all our athletes performed last season.

In other news, LAVIC held it annual conference. The key points from the conference are:

  • Season start date has NOT been finalised. LAVIC are working on a number of calendar options. This will be dependant on Government advice and what is permitted following current COVID 19 restrictions ending. Season dates will be sent out as soon as they can.
  • LAVIC are expecting delays to the start of the season and are working to minimise the impact on the season.
  • There may be different season start dates for regional and metro centres.
  • Australian Little Athletics Championship has been scheduled for 23 and 24 April 2021 in Melbourne. LAVIC are working the various calendar options back from that date.
  • No venues have been booked for major events. LAVIC will be working to secure locations once venues are allowed to take bookings. This may mean that new locations for certain competitions may be used.
  • A number centres confirmed that they are not planning on running their open days.

If you are interested in seeing what LAVIC have planned for season you can view the conference presentation here https://ourcentre.com.au/conference/

One final thing, we still have vacant position on the Wantirna LAC Committee, It is a general committee member and if you are interested please let the club secretary know.

From the President – Announcing Our New Committee for 2020-21 Season

Wantirna LAC held its 2019-20 season AGM on the 16th August 2020, following its postponement from April due to the Covid 19 restrictions. For the first time in the clubs history the AGM was held online with families logging in.

I am pleased to announce the following members were elected onto the committee for the upcoming 2020-21 season.

President – David Kearsley (Returning)

Secretary – Leanne Hawke (Returning)

Treasurer – John Park (New Member)

Team Manager – Janine Kearsley (Returning)

General Committee – Liam Mathews (Returning)

I thank those members for nominating for their roles.  A new member to the committee for this season is John Park. John replaces Marianda Kurdian as Treasurer, and the committee thanks Marianda for her service to the club over the last few years.

I would like to again extend our thanks to Wayne Griffin who has spent a number of years on the committee.  Wayne is finishing with Wantirna this season as his daughter Danielle has complete her U16 season.

The second general committee member position was not filled at the AGM and remains vacant. Can you help? Committee roles do not take up to much of your time and are well supported.

Thank you to all those members who attended the Annual General Meeting last night. We had a fantastic turnout for our first online AGM.

I would also like to thank Cr Marcia Timmers-Leitch, Knox City Council Deputy Mayor and Collier Ward Councillor for attending our AGM and staying online for the presentations afterwards. It is encouraging to have her support of local sporting clubs such as ours.

I look forward to working with everyone over the next year as our club goes from strength to strength as we move towards Season 2020-21.

Stay Safe, Stay Healthy

David Kearsley | President

From the President – Covid 19 Stage 4 Restrictions

LAVic on Monday provided the following update to centres regarding .

The Victorian State Government has declared a ‘state of disaster’ for the whole of Victoria. The following restrictions will be in place until 11.59pm on Sunday 13th September.:

  • Metropolitan Melbourne & Mitchell Shire: Metropolitan Melbourne moves to Stage 4 restrictions; Mitchell Shire remains on Stage 3 restrictions.
  • Regional Victoria, Stage 3 restrictions will be in place from 11.59pm on Wednesday 5 August.Regrettably, community sport – and Little Athletics – is banned in Metropolitan Melbourne and Regional Victoria for the next 6 weeks.LAVic has a number of affiliated Centres based in NSW. Any restrictions on sanctioned training and competition activities for those Centres will be determined by the NSW Government. Athletes residing in Victoria and registered with NSW Centres will be precluded from sanctioned training and competition while the current Victorian measures remain in place.New season preparationsThe announcements of tighter restrictions is really unfortunate news for Centres in their efforts to prepare for the new season, which is only a matter of weeks away. We have no control over these and they will create a lot of uncertainty in just about every facet of our sport. Hopefully, they drive infection rates right down and quickly.LAVic will continually provide information regarding the new season as it becomes available through our working relationship with Sport and Recreation Victoria and Vicsport.

For us as a club we will be advised by the Knox Exec Committee as to the start of the upcoming Track and Field season. The Knox LAC Exec Committee is working hard in the background to get the Track and Field season underway when it can. The Exec Committe is advising individual club committees as the information comes to hand. I encourage you to check the Wantirna Club website or the  Knox LAC website regularly to get the latest information.

In the mean time stay safe and stay healthy.

LA Vic Update – Little Athletics Activities and Reintroduction of Stage 3 Restrictions

LA Vic have provided the following update following the State Government Announcement that to re-impose stage 3 COVID-19 restrictions on all local government areas within metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire. The restrictions take effect from midnight 8th July and will remain in place for a period of 6 weeks.

Regrettably, community sport will be banned for impacted communities. This means athletes residing in the locked down areas will not be able to participate in Little Athletics activities during this time, and Centres located in locked down areas will not be authorised to conduct Little Athletics activities.

While this is extremely disappointing news for Little Athletics and thousands of our athletes in the short term, it is a reminder that our community faces a formidable, highly virulent and invisible foe and that there is much work that we must all do in order to defeat it in the months and years ahead.

That means that all training activities for little aths will cease for the 6 week period.

Little Aths Vic have previously advised that the State Track and Field and State Cross Country have already been cancelled.

Knox LAC will provide further updates as information is provided from LA Vic.

Please note that the Knox LAC AGM will move to an online only meeting. Knox LAC will provide further details and is still going ahead on 27 July 2020 at 7.30pm
